Iceland – April 2018

Ever since I took a serious interest in photography in 2014, a visit to Iceland was at the top of my wishlist. The photos I’ve seen of the magnificent landscapes there were simply amazing. I needed to get there and capture my vision of Iceland. My wife cheerfully agreed to join me on the trip, and her dad was generous enough to fly to Minnesota to care for our four kids while we were gone. Alas, months of careful planning couldn’t anticipate the worst snowstorm Minnesota had seen in nearly thirty years. Our flight out was canceled, and a second wave of snow the following day seriously threatened us losing another day in the Land of Fire and Ice. We made it to the airport thanks to the epic winter driving skills of a close family friend. We got to the airport and boarded the plane. Lightroom’s New Dehaze Feature

Fog-B-Gone I had a few questions about the Sturgeon Bay Pierhead Light photo that I posted on Facebook. I mentioned in the comment on the photo that I’d used the new “Dehaze” feature/slider in the most recent version of Lightroom CC 2015. Here’s the before and after: Thoughts… As you can see, the results are pretty amazing. The “before” image is right out of the camera. The only thing I did to the “after” shot was move the “Dehaze” slider in the Develop Module all the way to the right (+100). The photo does have more grain and artifacts, and the colors are a little overdone and false, but almost all of the fog from the scene has been removed! Amazing. What do you think? Building the Scene

This shot won’t win any awards, but I am proud of it. I took this image on the Fall Minnesota North Shore trip in 2014. I had heard that a good photo should tell a story, but for some reason I couldn’t really grasp that concept. When I found out that we were going to visit a historic Maple Syrup Farm, I thought it would be great to challenge myself to tell a story with a photograph. I tasked myself with focusing on using this opportunity to tell a story with a photo. However, I got there and didn’t know where to begin. I wandered around aimlessly and hoped inspiration would hit me in the face. It didn’t. Then I spotted this log pile. (Inspiration?) Something about the elements in the scene caught my attention. It wasn’t like I got a profound creative idea and went with it; but I saw something that I could work with, and I knew it would take some hard work to get the elements right. The Magic of Lightroom

I can’t believe that only 6 short months ago I was using iPhoto to manage and edit all of my photos. Since then, I’ve switched to Lightroom and don’t think I can ever go back. Lightroom makes it so easy to get incredible results in a very short period of time. I’m amazed at how a seemingly boring photo can be salvaged and become a work of art. Take this photo I took while walking around north of Lake Phalen in Saint Paul. It was a dreary, cold day and I was walking back to my car and liked how the Gateway Trail bridge was framing the one behind it (Frost Ave.). I thought it might make a good grayscale photo when I got it back on my computer. The before is pretty drab, eh? I think if I had opened this photo in iPhoto, I would have passed it up. But in Lightroom you can quickly hover over certain presets and immediately see a preview of what the image would look like with that preset applied. MN North Shore Trip

I got to go up to the North Shore for a Photography Workshop offered through Dakota County Technical College. I went up there hoping for a few good shots, and ended up coming back with that and then some; but most importantly, I learned so much about landscape photography and developed some confidence in myself and my abilities. Over the past year or two, I’ve learned a lot about photo theory, but have had little time to practice. This trip really immersed me in photography for the entire weekend! Enjoy the photos!
